Abstract

Abstract This chapter provides the reader with a review of the pathogenic clostridial species and their associated diseases. The discussion includes the topics of Clostridium difficile colitis, Clostridium perfringens gas gangrene, and Clostridium tetani tetanus. It continues by covering epidemiology, sources of infection, toxin production, and clinical features. It then goes on to discuss the principles of management, including antimicrobial therapy, surgical intervention, supportive care, and infection control measures. Finally, it covers the aspects of preventive strategies and looks at vaccination and wound management. All of the information maps to the RCEM Basic Sciences syllabus, making it relevant to Emergency Medicine practice and the examination.
