Abstract

Abstract This chapter provides the reader with an outline of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, and management of Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It then goes on to describe the mechanisms of immune evasion, as well as transmission routes and complications. Such complications include conditions like meningococcal septicaemia, Waterhouse–Friderichsen syndrome, pelvic inflammatory disease, and infertility. Finally, it goes on to summarize diagnostic methods, antimicrobial therapy, contact tracing, and preventive measures including vaccination and prophylaxis. All of the information contained in this chapter on Neisseria maps to the RCEM Basic Sciences syllabus, making it relevant to Emergency Medicine practice and the examination.
