Abstract

Abstract This chapter provides for the reader a review of the microbiology, the transmission, and the clinical course of Bordetella pertussis infection. It begins by describing the epidemiology, the adherence mechanisms, and the toxin production. It goes on and looks at the three classical stages of the infection: catarrhal, paroxysmal, and convalescent. It then goes on to discuss the complications, the diagnostic methods, and the antimicrobial management of the infection. Finally, the chapter looks at the role of vaccination in disease prevention. All of the information maps to the RCEM Basic Sciences syllabus, making it relevant to Emergency Medicine practice and the examination.
