Abstract

Abstract This chapter provides the reader with a summary of the microbiology, epidemiology, clinical features, and management of three important gram-negative bacterial genera as applied to emergency medicine. It reviews opportunistic and multidrug-resistant Klebsiella infections. It looks at the spectrum of Salmonella disease from gastroenteritis to typhoid fever. It discusses the diverse intestinal and extraintestinal manifestations of Escherichia coli. It then goes on to outline the modes of transmission, virulence factors, complications, antimicrobial resistance, and principles of prevention. All of the information in the chapter maps to the RCEM Basic Sciences syllabus, making it relevant to Emergency Medicine practice and the examination.
