Abstract

Abstract This chapter reviews the epidemiology, pathogenic mechanisms, clinical presentations, diagnosis, and treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. It outlines the organism’s environmental reservoirs, routes of transmission in hospitals, and its role as an opportunistic cause of severe nosocomial disease. Key virulence factors, such as pili, capsule, and exotoxins, are described alongside the range of possible infections, from skin and ear disease to pneumonia and septicaemia. Diagnostic culture techniques and the challenge of antibiotic resistance are discussed, with emphasis on combination therapy and infection control measures in healthcare settings. All of the information maps to the RCEM Basic Sciences syllabus, making it relevant to Emergency Medicine practice and the examination.
