Abstract

Abstract This chapter provides a summary for the reader about the microbiology, epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, and management of Chlamydia trachomatis infection, as well as other Chlamydia species. It starts by covering genital infections, their often-asymptomatic nature, potential complications, and coexistence with other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The chapter also discusses chlamydial ophthalmia neonatorum, its transmission during birth, clinical presentation, and management. Diagnostic techniques include microscopy, culture, and antigen detection, with treatment recommendations tailored for adults, children, and pregnant women. All of the information maps to the RCEM Basic Sciences syllabus, making it relevant to Emergency Medicine practice and the examination.
