Abstract

Abstract This chapter provides the reader with a summary of the epidemiology, clinical features, complications, and prevention of measles, mumps, and rubella. The chapter outlines the modes of transmission, incubation periods, and infectivity for each of the viruses. It goes on to highlight measles complications and looks at conditions like encephalitis and SSPE, mumps-associated meningoencephalitis and orchitis, and congenital rubella syndrome. It then describes the combined MMR vaccine, and includes information about the administration schedule as well as common post-vaccination effects. All of the information maps to the RCEM Basic Sciences syllabus, making it relevant to Emergency Medicine practice and the examination.
