Abstract

Abstract This chapter provides the reader with information in order to review the epidemiology, life cycles, clinical features, diagnosis, and management of threadworm, tapeworm, roundworm, and hookworm infections. It starts by covering the transmission routes, intestinal and extraintestinal manifestations, and complications. Such complications include malnutrition, obstruction, and seizures. It looks at key diagnostic techniques, including stool microscopy and, for instances of neurocysticercosis, imaging. It then describes anthelmintic treatments and public health measures, including information about household treatment and hygiene advice. All of the information maps to the RCEM Basic Sciences syllabus, making it relevant to Emergency Medicine practice and the examination.
