Abstract

Abstract This chapter covers the introduction, recording principles, findings and interpretation of normal electroencephalography (EEG). It explains key concepts, including generators of EEG activity. The performance of quality EEG recordings is outlined, including use of electrodes and montages, addressing technological challenges and artefacts, use of polygraphy, activation procedures, reactivity and responsiveness testing. Normal EEG patterns are described in wakefulness and sleep, including sleep staging, as well as variants of uncertain significance. More detailed report-writing principles and relevant terminology build upon the general principles of report writing covered in Chapter 1. The use of analytical EEG and the clinical applications along with an extensive list of epilepsy mimics and differential diagnoses are also included in this chapter.
