Abstract

Abstract This chapter explains the specific approach to the paediatric patient in electroneuromyography (nerve conduction studies/electromyography; NCS/EMG) before addressing paediatric considerations and modified testing protocols in this age group (the basic testing protocols and general anatomy are addressed in Chapters 5–6). Neonatal presentations are covered in this chapter as well as specifics in paediatric neuromuscular diagnoses that are not shared with older age-groups, which are dealt with in Chapter 8. Age-related normative data are listed for common NCS (amplitudes, conduction velocities and latencies), less common NCS (phrenic nerve and blink reflex) and EMG (including motor unit potential analysis, quantitative EMG and stimulated potential analysis with concentric needle electrodes (SPACE)).
