Abstract

Abstract Key Points: • A cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) involves measurements of cardiac and respiratory function whilst the subject exercises to their maximum. • CPET is a useful tool for diagnosing heart and lung disease, working out why someone is breathless, quantifying fitness, and predicting outcomes. • Preoperative CPET helps to stratify surgical risk and plan perioperative care. • Exercise prescription can be tailored to the individual after a CPET. • CPET can also be used to monitor the response to any interventions.
