Abstract

Abstract Key Points: • Minute ventilation (VE) increases during exercise. • In healthy people, VE does not normally limit exercise capacity. • If VE reaches 80% of predicted or above during a CPET, exercise capacity is probably limited by the respiratory system. • Tidal volume (Vt) usually increases in the early part of a CPET. • In the later stages of a CPET, the breathing frequency (Bf) accelerates.
