Abstract

Abstract Key Points: • CO2 output (VCO2) increases during exercise. • It is produced by the oxidation of carbohydrates and fat. • It is also a by-product from the buffering of H+ (e.g. from lactic acid) by bicarbonate to maintain cellular pH. • Exhaled CO2 is tightly linked to alveolar ventilation. • Increased physiological dead space impairs CO2 output.
