Abstract

Abstract Key Points: • Oxygen-pulse (O2-pulse) is often taken to be a surrogate indicator of cardiac stroke volume (SV). • A normal subject should achieve an O2-pulse of >10 mL/beat at peak exercise. • A plateau in the O2-pulse at a low value implies limited cardiac output, because of either heart disease or disorders of the pulmonary circulation. • Do not overinterpret a plateau appearance of the O2-pulse if the VO2max is normal. • Oxygen desaturation will affect the O2-pulse.
