Abstract

Abstract Key Points: • Athletes often want a CPET to evaluate their fitness and identify training thresholds. • VO2max is described by many as the best marker of ‘fitness’. • VO2max in athletes is usually reported as a relative or weight-adjusted value (mL/min/kg), since the unadjusted absolute or percentage-predicted value is not easy to interpret. • Athletes can desaturate during exercise. • CPET does not reliably detect, nor rule out, exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.
