Abstract

Abstract Key Points: • Exertional breathlessness may arise because of an abnormal breathing pattern, called dysfunctional breathing (DB). • CPET can be used to identify DB with a chaotic pattern of ventilatory parameters (e.g. Bf and Vt). • To best identify DB, plot respiratory data (Bf and ventilation) against time. • Watching a breathing pattern during a CPET can help detect abnormalities. • Observing the Vt versus time plot during a CPET can help detect sighing or variable breathing patterns.
