Abstract

Abstract This chapter examines how digital technologies are reshaping the prescribing, administration, and monitoring of medicines across health and care settings. Grounded in the principles of safety, integration, and person-centred care, it explores the impact of systems such as electronic medicines administration records, barcode medication administration, and robotic dispensing solutions. These technologies are shown to reduce errors, streamline workflows, and enhance clinical decision-making, while also requiring professionals to maintain competencies in data security, interprofessional collaboration, and safe technology use. The chapter illustrates these themes through practical examples and case studies, including the management of complex regimens such as clozapine and the deployment of automated pharmacy systems. It highlights the importance of interoperability, accurate documentation, and timely intervention in supporting safe practice. At the same time, it reflects on the enduring professional responsibilities that remain regardless of technological change, emphasising the need for robust verification, staff competence, and adherence to safety protocols. By integrating technical capabilities with clinical oversight, the chapter provides a structured foundation for safer, more efficient, and digitally enabled approaches to medicines management that support both professional practice and patient safety.
