Abstract

Abstract This chapter focuses on the use of tactile communication and the differences between visual and tactile sign language interpreting. Professional knowledge of interpreting for the deafblind and insight from new linguistic research on tactile communication will be summarized into a new model: the Ten Steps Tactile Interpreting Model. The transition from a visual approach to communication to a tactile orientation will be discussed in relation to the following research question: How can participation be mediated by interpretation service? This chapter will be of interest to practitioners and researchers involved in interaction studies and interpreter services, and to those working with deafblind people.
