Abstract

Abstract Spirituality and religion (S/R) are integral dimensions of human experience that mental health graduate education and other training programs need to address. However, there is a lack of tools for assessing clinical competence for attending to clients’ S/R. How can we ensure that clinicians are adequately skilled to handle these dimensions of their clients’ lives? This chapter summarizes the Brief Spirituality/Religiosity Competency (BSRC) Scale, an observer rating scale of clinicians’ basic attitudes, knowledge, and skills related to S/R competence, and the BSRC evaluates the sixteen spiritual and religious competencies developed by Vieten and colleagues (2013) and provides a guide for how to use the BSRC during clinical supervision and practicum training courses.
