Abstract

Abstract This chapter considers the diverse enactments of the liturgical texts of the Book of Common Prayer and the various components that constitute the performance of the liturgy. First is an examination of the rubrics that govern liturgical actions and how they allow for different liturgical styles in various contexts. This will lead into a discussion of how the enactment of the liturgical texts through ceremonial actions, gestures, music, vestments, and worship space affect meaning and interpretation, including a study of some examples from the history of the Prayer Book. Next will be an analysis of how several different worshipping communities from throughout the Anglican Communion use the freedom allowed by the Book of Common Prayer. This chapter will conclude by looking at the formative aspect of worship and some of the emerging ethical issues related to the performance of the liturgy.
