Abstract

Abstract People with disabilities have historically been marginalized, seen as tragic figures devoid of hope or purpose. However, disability doesn’t extinguish hope, purpose, or the potential for positive societal contributions. Instead, it offers a unique perspective as part of the largest minority group in the United States. Individuals with disabilities embark on a journey to discover their disability identity within the context of their unique experiences. This chapter delves into factors including disability culture, historical perspectives, models of disability identity development, social support systems, and adaptable strengths like resilience. These elements collectively shape the intervention techniques outlined here, aimed at empowering individuals with disabilities to nurture a positive disability identity.
