Abstract

Abstract This chapter offers an in-depth exploration of intensifiers (aka amplifiers), focusing on their role in amplifying meaning and enhancing expression in language. It begins by examining various definitions and theoretical approaches to intensification, providing a foundational understanding of the term. The discussion then shifts to different types of intensification, including that of adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and nouns, as well as downtoners and expressive intensifiers, highlighting their linguistic properties and the contexts in which they are employed. The chapter also explores how speaker-related variables influence the usage of intensifiers. Additionally, it investigates the pragmatic functions of intensifiers, including their ability to convey emphasis and emotion, reflecting on the significance of these crucial linguistic devices in communication.
