Abstract

Abstract Belgian mobility policy plays a crucial role in the national strategy for reducing carbon emissions, with transport accounting for 23.4 per cent of Belgium’s total CO2 emissions. Most emissions within this sector come from road transport, highlighting the need for reform. This chapter offers an overview of the research on the intersection of climate objectives and social equity that highlights how mobility policies can either perpetuate or alleviate inequalities. By addressing the disparities in access to transport, affordability, and environmental impact, particularly for marginalized groups, the chapter reviews and evaluates current and potential policy measures in Belgium. It also examines regional and federal initiatives, such as road pricing and electrification efforts, considering both their environmental and equity impacts. Based on this overview, we conclude that achieving both climate and equity goals requires structural reforms, a better coordination of policies across regional governance structures and a more inclusive approach to mobility and spatial planning.
