Abstract

Reason for correction: Species misidentification Summary of changes:Copepods of the study species, Neocalanus flemingeri, were originally identified morphologically in minimally manipulated live animals.Since the publication of this original paper, we have developed a high-sensitivity species-specific marker for our RNA-seq data (Lenz et al., 2025a, b) and applied it to the 33 experimental individuals of the 2023 study. This new analysis revealed that one of the three replicates in the Week zero (Wk0) treatment was a congener N. plumchrus (sample: Wk0.1) and not N. flemingeri as stated. As both species exhibited a gene-expression profile similar to the two N. flemingeri in the treatment, we have concluded that the misidentification had no significant impact on the reported for the Wk0 results. However, the new analysis also identified two of three replicates in the No Food treatment (NF) as Calanus marshallae (replicates: NF.1 and NF.2).These two replicates exhibited a gene-expression profile distinct from that of the N. flemingeri of the no-food treatment (NF.3).Thus, the misidentification did impact the starvation results, as described in the following sections. We re-analysed the data by removing NF.1 and NF.2.
