Abstract

Mass shootings have become a painful and widespread issue in modern society in recent years, leaving lasting scars on families and communities across the United States. As a social work practitioner, I am genuinely committed to addressing society’s most complex problems, and tackling mass shootings requires advocating for practical, evidence-based solutions. This article aims to present a persuasive argument from the perspective of a social work practitioner in favor of implementing comprehensive background checks for gun purchases to combat the escalating issue of mass shootings. Mass shootings have a profound effect, shattering communities and traumatizing individuals. In addition to the devastating loss of innocent lives caused by these heinous acts of violence, the general populace is also made fearful and uneasy. Silva and Greene-Colozzi (2022) have argued that taking a proactive and informed approach as social work leaders could significantly reduce mass shootings and promote safer communities through evidence-based, comprehensive strategies. The argument for thorough background checks for gun transactions is based on the idea that responsible gun ownership is essential for ensuring public safety. Potential buyers would need to go through extensive exams, including evaluation of their mental health and check on their criminal history. Background checks help stop those with evil intentions from legally obtaining weapons by identifying people who might be a risk to themselves or others. As we endeavor to safeguard the welfare of our communities and protect vulnerable people, this crucial step is consistent with the underlying ideals of social work.
