Bridging Research and Practice in Social Work Research : Publishing Perspectives from NASW Press Editors and Authors
Abstract
The purpose of Social Work Research is to advance knowledge in social work that directly informs and strengthens practice in all its forms. In the journal, this mission is reflected through the publication of quantitative and qualitative studies, analytical reviews, theoretical articles, practice-based or evaluation research, and shorter innovative pieces that introduce emerging ideas or methodological developments. The journal publishes high-quality scholarship that deepens understanding of the complex social issues faced by individuals, families, and communities and serves as a provider of rigorous evidence to guide effective interventions and improve social welfare systems. The journal values methodological diversity and encourages interdisciplinary and community-engaged approaches that reflect the evolving landscape of social work research. Publishing is, at its core, a scholarly act of engagement—one that advances the shared mission of strengthening social work practice, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and promoting the social, emotional, and mental well-being of individuals, families, and communities, including the children and schools we ultimately seek to support. Yet, publishing is not only a professional opportunity; it is also an ethical mandate. Disseminating knowledge advances the profession, enhances professional development, and fosters dialogue that moves our collective understanding forward. Engaging with research allows us to reflect critically on our own work, share innovations, and contribute to ongoing learning. As stated in the National Association of Social Workers’ (NASW; 2021) Code of Ethics: Social workers should contribute to the knowledge base of social work and share with colleagues their knowledge related to practice, research, and ethics. Social workers should seek to contribute to the profession’s literature and to share their knowledge at professional meetings and conferences. (Standard 5.01[d])
