Subconjunctival povidone-iodine in the treatment of bleb-associated endophthalmitis
Abstract
PURPOSE: To describe a case of bleb-associated endophthalmitis managed with adjunct subconjunctival injection of 0.5%/0.05 mL of povidone-iodine (PI). METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: An 81-year-old man presented with 3 days of pain and vision loss in his left eye. His overall presentation was consistent with bleb-associated endophthalmitis which was managed initially with vitreous tap and intravitreal antibiotics along with fortified antibiotics and topical steroids. At the patient's 3-day follow-up, 0.5%/0.05 mL of povidone-iodine (PI) was injected into the bleb with rapid resolution of purulence within the bleb in 48 hours. No recurrences or adverse events were noted at the 4-week follow-up. DISCUSSION: Subconjunctival PI may represent a useful option in treating cases of bleb-associated endophthalmitis.
