Splenic abscess diagnosis, therapeutic modality and prognosis: a case report and qualitative review of the literature
Abstract
Introduction: A splenic abscess is a focal lesion defined as a suppuration collected in the spleen. It is a rare entity. We report a case of spleen abscess in a non-immunocompetent patient, treated by splenectomy and antibiotic therapy. Case presentation: This is a 19-year-old patient, with no particular history, who consulted the emergency surgery department for left hypochondrium pain. The CT scan showed a large splenic abscess measuring 134 × 126 × 150 mm, or a volume of 1317 cc. Clinical discussion: Splenic abscess is a very rare. The clinical picture has no specificity. The diagnosis is based on radiological explorations. Spontaneous evolution of splenic abscess would be constantly fatal. Splenectomy remains the most accessible method in our practice. Conclusion: A splenic abscess is a focal lesion defined as a suppuration collected in the spleen. The diagnostic and therapeutic management of splenic abscesses remains poorly codified. Splenectomy remains the most accessible method in our practice.
