Editorial introductions
Abstract
Current Opinion in Neurology was launched in 1988. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of neurology is divided into 14 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Journal's Editors in Chief and Section Editors for this issue. EDITORS IN CHIEF Philippe RyvlinPhilippe RyvlinPhilippe Ryvlin is Professor of Neurology and Chair of the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV), Switzerland, as well as an Affiliated Professor of multimodal epilepsy surgery evaluation at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, both since 2015. He previously chaired the Department of Functional Neurology and Epileptology as well as the Division of Pediatric Clinical Neurophysiology at Hospices Civils de Lyon, Lyon, France, where he held a position of full Professor of Neurology since 2000. His clinical expertise spans the fields of epilepsy and headache, with a particular emphasis on epilepsy surgery and intracerebral EEG investigations (SEEG). His primary research focuses on the understanding, prediction and prevention of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP), as well as seizure detection using wearable devices. Notable contributions to these areas include demonstrating that most cases of SUDEP are precipitated by a generalised tonic–clonic seizure followed by terminal postictal apnea, and that both pharmacological and surgical antiepileptic therapies reduce the risk of SUDEP. His research team has also developed innovative platforms to promote data sharing, particularly of intracerebral EEG recordings, with the aim of advancing the development of dedicated foundation models. He has authored or co-authored approximately 400 peer-reviewed scientific publications. Peter J GoadsbyPeter J GoadsbyPeter Goadsby MD PhD FRS is Senior Associate to the President and Professor, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia. He is Director, NIHR King's Clinical Research Facility, Professor of Neurology, King's College London, and an Honorary Consultant Neurologist at King's College Hospital and the Hospital for Children, Great Ormond St, London, UK. He is a National Institute for Health and Care Research Emeritus Senior Investigator. He is Emeritus Professor of Neurology, University of California, Los Angeles, USA. Peter Goadsby obtained his medical degree and training at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, and neurology training with James W. Lance and clinical neurophysiology with David Burke. He did post-doctoral work in New York with Don Reis at Cornell, and Jacques Seylaz, Paris, and post-graduate neurology training at Queen Square, London with C David Marsden, Andrew Lees, Anita Harding and W Ian McDonald. He returned to UNSW, and the Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney, as a consultant neurologist and became an Associate Professor of Neurology. He was appointed Wellcome Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Neurology, University College London and was Professor of Clinical Neurology and Honorary Consultant Neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London. He was Professor of Neurology, at University of California, San Francisco, USA. SECTION EDITORS Peter KellyPeter KellyAfter completing training in Dublin, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Prof Kelly returned to Dublin where he is Professor of Neurology and Stroke Service Co-Director at Mater University Hospital/University College Dublin, Ireland. He is immediate Past President of the European Stroke Organisation and has served in a leading role in multiple ESO initiatives, including the Executive Committee, Stroke Action Plan for Europe, European Stroke Organisation Conference, ESO Trials Network Committee and ESO Trials Alliance (ESOTA). His research focus is on clinical trials and risk prediction for secondary prevention after stroke, with a particular focus on inflammation. He was Chief Investigator on the CONVINCE trial and several other large multi-centre studies, and Lead Investigator for the Health Research Board Stroke Clinical Trials Network Ireland. He has been awarded approximately €15 million in research funding, over €10 million as principal investigator. He has published widely in leading journals, contributed to national and international stroke guidelines, edited a book on stroke prevention and served on the editorial boards of leading international journals. From 2010–16, he was Neurology Clinical Lead for the Irish National Stroke Programme, a national quality improvement programme which led modernisation of clinical care for stroke in Ireland. Adolfo M. BronsteinAdolfo M. BronsteinProfessor Bronstein is a professor of neuro-otology (emeritus) and consultant neurologist, with over 300 papers and several books published. His main interest is the interaction of visual, vestibular and proprioceptive inputs for the control of balance and spatial orientation. Lately he has dedicated himself to investigating the role of white matter small vessel disease in inducing dizziness in the elderly.
