Abstract

It is customary to identify ψ + = ν R + C ν R ¯ T with a Majorana fermion on the basis of chirality changing charge conjugation C ˜ : ν R → C ν R ¯ T and parity P ˜ : ν R → i γ 4 ν R . The theorem on the absence of a Majorana-Weyl fermion in d = 4 states C ˜ γ 5 C ˜ − 1 = − γ 5 with C ˜ = C γ 4 T , and, thus, the charge conjugation of the equivalent Majorana ψ + = ( 1 + γ 5 2 ) ν R + ( 1 − γ 5 2 ) C ν R ¯ T vanishes without subsidiary γ 5 → − γ 5
