Abstract

Tris(pyridin-2-yl)borates are an emerging class of scorpionate ligands. Distinguished by their robustness and nucleophilicity, they have promise as alternatives to tris(pyrazolyl)borates in coordination chemistry, materials applications, and catalysis. In this article, bis[phenyltris(pyridin-2-yl)borato]cobalt(III) tetracarbonylcobalt(–I) dichloromethane monosolvate, [Co(C 21 H 17 BN 3 ) 2 ][Co(CO) 4 ]·CH 2 Cl 2 or [Tpy 2 Co][Co(CO) 4 ]·CH 2 Cl 2 , was prepared by the reaction of hydrogen phenyltris(pyridin-2-yl)borate (TpyH), triethylamine, and Co(CO) 4 I. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction resulted in a homoleptic complex consisting of the diamagnetic [Tpy 2 Co] + cation and the tetracarbonylcobaltate {[Co(CO) 4 ] − } counter-ion. The unusual Co III /Co —I mixed-valence composition presumably results from disproportionation. [Tpy 2 Co][Co(CO) 4 ] represents the first mixed-valence tris(pyridin-2-yl)borate complex.
