Is Maria Montessori’s Philosophy Still Relevant for the 21st Century?
Abstract
Abstract The modern world we live in is constantly bombarding us with the latest advances in almost every aspect of our lives, including education. Maria Montessori’s philosophical principles defy this current trend and remains true to a hands-on approach within a that believes individual growth flourishes when respect for self, others, and the environment, are firmly rooted and nurtured. Each of these components is interdependent on each other in an environment that mirrors the real world where children are given the freedom to work independently and with others in child-directed meaningful activities, rather than teacher and/or government directed preset curricula. Maria Montessori may have established her philosophy over hundred years ago, but in a world filled with “new and improved” everything, we continue to see youth with declining mental health, increased expulsions, and aggression. This chapter examines the relevance of Montessori in today’s world and how this internationally recognized approach may provide valuable lessons beyond the classroom.
