Abstract

Abstract With the confluence of image processing and AI, surveillance systems are being ushered into a new era within smart cities, at the forefront of which are enhanced capabilities for public safety, traffic management, and urban planning. As we look into the evolution of surveillance from traditional systems to AI-powered ones, we notice a trend toward real‑time data ingestion, object detection, and predictive analytics in the future of surveillance. It closely examines various use cases such as facial recognition-based crime prevention, anomaly detection, visual data analysis for optimized traffic flow, and environmental monitoring of infrastructure maintenance and pollution for industrial applications. The chapter also discusses issues related to ethical and privacy issues, algorithmic bias, and infrastructure expenses. Showcasing a blueprint for ethical governance in AI-aided surveillance and a vision for media expansion. Future directions and case studies are explored - with a particular emphasis on generative AI or autonomous drones. This chapter seeks to guide researchers, policymakers, and technologists in how artificial intelligence can be used to help create safer, more efficient, and more responsive cities.
