Abstract

Abstract This chapter examines the strategic transition of internal consulting units (ICUs) from centralized cost centers to revenue‑generating profit centers within their parent organizations. When ICUs are funded by parent company budgets, there exists ongoing uncertainty about their value and organizational necessity. This chapter explores the value that ICUs provide and demonstrates that by adopting a revenue generation model, units can experience enhanced credibility, more autonomy, and the potential for increased revenue from a combination of internal and external clients. This transition presents challenges, including the need for greater role clarity, appropriate pricing structures, and navigating the tension between objectivity and relationship-building. However, the transformation may well be worth it if it can improve ICU standing, security, and organizational value while creating win‑win scenarios for both consulting teams and parent organizations.
