The COSMOS Model: Navigating Disruption With Organizational Resilience and Strategic Adaptability
Abstract
Abstract The COVID‑19 pandemic underscored the limits of traditional change management models in the face of large-scale, high-velocity disruptions. This chapter introduces the concept of a Catalytic Operational Shift (COS)—an externally triggered event that demands rapid, system‑wide adaptation and reshapes organizational culture, behavior, and structure. In response, the chapter presents the COSMOS model, a six‑phase framework designed to support internal consultants and organizational leaders as they navigate real‑time rupture and facilitate coherent, resilient transformation. Rooted in classical and contemporary organizational theory, COSMOS emphasizes the diagnostic and generative power of crisis, reframing disruption not as a temporary deviation but as a revelatory force that exposes vulnerabilities and invites renewal. The model integrates sensemaking, structural realignment, cultural reframing, and strategic reflection to guide organizations through complexity with agility and intention. Drawing from recent examples, including the global shift to remote work, this chapter situates COSMOS as both a theoretical contribution and a practical roadmap for organizations seeking to build adaptive capacity in a volatile world. It positions internal consultants as pivotal actors in bridging operational demands with cultural coherence, ultimately guiding organizations from rupture to reinvention.
