Abstract

Abstract In this chapter we address two challenges Latinas in the academy (particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM) face when they try to identify circumstances that enhance their recruitment and thriving. The first is being hired, and the second is being fully included. Accordingly, we concentrate on the search process and on behaviors that will help foster inclusion. Those processes occur within departments, even though institutions set policies at college and university levels. We analyze some of the cognitive errors that majority group members are likely to make in hiring and treatment of faculty. We then provide recommendations for policies and procedures that will help to reduce those errors and mitigate their effects. We also provide suggestions for how to intervene when a negative comment or behavior has occurred. Throughout, we rely on the best data available to analyze the issues and make recommendations for change.
