Abstract

Abstract After-School programs are a common feature of US schools, and they typically focus on providing enrichment for sports and the arts or remediation for students needing academic support. A slew of equity concerns arise, as students from more affluent communities typically receive more exposure to afterschool enrichment, while less privileged students receive more childcare or remediation. In this essay, we discuss how After-School programs can be extended and improved—particularly in divested communities—to increase students’ opportunity to access advanced academic learning, as well as build out an exceptional talent pool across the country.
