Abstract

Abstract This introductory chapter contextualises the book within the dynamic realm of international higher education (IHE) in Australia, influenced by globalisation, neoliberalism and uncertainties arising in the aftermath of the pandemic. It highlights Australia’s pivotal role in the global education market, particularly in relation to students from the Global South, with China and India consistently ranking as the leading source countries over the past 15 years. Additionally, the chapter examines recent policy modifications that have impacted the educational experiences and aspirations of international students. It also articulates the rationale and objectives of this edited book, which consolidates 10 student-authored narratives from Australian Master’s programmes. By prioritising student perspectives, this book elevates their lived experiences, agency and autonomy in navigating intricate educational, cultural and institutional landscapes. In this regard, the volume emphasises the imperative for IHE policymakers, institutions and practitioners in the host nation to engage in critical reflection and enhancement of their practices, ultimately fostering the well-being and success of international students. The chapter concludes with an overview of the forthcoming chapters, which encompass a succinct introduction to the conceptual framework of this book, introductions to the 10 student-authored chapters, an introduction to a dialogical chapter that provides a thematic analysis of the expectations, challenges and aspirations of international students derived from two focus group discussions with the 10 student authors, and a final chapter that leverages this rich tapestry of lived experiences to offer future recommendations to key stakeholders within the Australian higher education sector, including policymakers, educators, researchers and international students.
