Abstract

Abstract International graduates from non-English-speaking backgrounds face significant challenges in securing jobs in Australia. To address this issue, various strategies have been developed, creating a cohesive framework of perspectives and resources. It is suggested that international graduates entering specific fields must adapt to the professional practices of those sectors to advance their careers effectively. This chapter aims to identify obstacles that international graduates encounter while seeking career opportunities in Australia, particularly in industries that are less accommodating for those without an English background. An example is provided through the experience of a Chinese international medical student, highlighting difficulties encountered during clinical placements. The primary barrier identified is a lack of language proficiency, which hinders adjustment to the clinical environment in Australia. Additionally, the psychological pressure exacerbates challenges to personal development. This discussion analyses the existing difficulties faced by graduates in smaller industries through the lens of human, cultural and identity capitals, referencing the framework proposed by Tomlinson in 2017. The chapter focuses mainly on the portion of international graduates in less favoured fields, such as medicine. Although the obstacles to entering these fields may be less evident when compared to the broader international student population, adapting to the workplace after entry remains essential. While many studies have investigated programmes that assist these graduates in integrating into the Australian job market, individual characteristics also significantly influence their success in specific sectors. The findings may have broader implications for the international student community in Australia, potentially enhancing their personal achievements throughout their careers.
