Unravelling Expectations, Vexations and Aspirations of the Australian International Student Experience
Abstract
Abstract This chapter explores the complex experiences of international students in Australian higher education, focusing on the interrelated dimensions of their expectations, vexations and aspirations. Based on qualitative data gathered from two in-depth focus group interviews with Chinese and Indian postgraduate students, the study investigates how these learners navigate academic, cultural and institutional landscapes during their time in Australia. Initially drawn by the promise of academic excellence, global recognition and structured career pathways, many students encounter unexpected challenges, including academic ambiguity, cultural dissonance and emotional isolation. Yet, these obstacles also reveal the remarkable resilience and adaptability that international students demonstrate as they recalibrate their goals and reconstruct their identities. The chapter discusses in detail emerging themes from the focus group discussions using the Lifelong–Lifewide Learning Ecology Framework as a conceptual lens, as discussed earlier in Chapter Two. This framework enables a deeper understanding of how students’ formal and informal learning experiences intersect across personal, academic and social domains. Through their reflective stories, the chapter uncovers how these students evolve as cosmopolites, individuals shaped by and actively shaping globalised educational environments. Taking a glocalised perspective, the chapter also considers how existing policy and practice in Australian higher education can be refined to better support international students’ holistic development. In doing so, it offers insights into how institutions can respond more effectively to the diverse social, cultural, academic and aspirational needs of this important student cohort.
