Carbon Footprint Reduction: Insights from a Green Campus Model
Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to analyze how sustainability actions with the potential to reduce carbon footprint (CF) contribute to the concept of a Green Campus at the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina (IFSC), Florianópolis (FLN) Campus. The focus is to investigate the efficacy of ongoing sustainable implementations and projects and how they align with global and local sustainability goals. Design/Methodology/Approach: The research was conducted at the IFSC-FLN Campus, where data collection included bibliographic and documentary surveys, semi-structured interviews with 10 employees in strategic positions, and direct observation. The data were analyzed through the content analysis technique. This method allowed for a detailed assessment of sustainable actions and projects, particularly those that directly influence the campus’s CF. Findings: Key actions identified include the installation of photovoltaic solar energy systems, efficient waste management programs, and initiatives for education and awareness on sustainability. These actions reflect significant progress by IFSC Campus FLN in implementing sustainable practices, demonstrating an institutional commitment to reducing the CF and promoting a greener educational environment. Practical Implications: However, the study highlights the need for improved emission monitoring and reporting systems to optimize sustainability strategies. Furthermore, it suggests that future research should expand the scope to include other campuses, allowing for a comparative analysis that could strengthen environmental management practices across the IFSC network. This holistic and integrated approach may serve as a model for other higher education institutions seeking to advance toward more sustainable operations.
