The Nrich Foods Story: Promoting Millet-based Nutrition Solutions in India
Abstract
Purpose: This study is based on Nrich Foods, an organisation that is leveraging millet-based solutions to facilitate nutritional and food security across India. It plans to scale in Andhra Pradesh (AP) and Telangana, which are becoming increasingly aware of health. It also calls attention to the nutritional benefits of millet, including complex carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and bioactivity. Still, it highlights that their underutilisation is owing to processing challenges, low subsidies, and consumer ignorance. Design/Methodology/Approach: This research uses qualitative case study methodology to analyse the market penetration strategies of Nrich Foods through semi-structured interviews with key company stakeholders. It studies current and developing market dynamics and value chains, challenges, and review complex issues such as branding, distribution logistics, and competition from brands like ITC and Patanjali, while evaluating strategies such as region-wise product development, tech-driven logistics, etc. Findings: The study highlights the potential of millets to counteract malnutrition and lifestyle diseases but notes their commercial underutilisation due to awareness gaps and logistics issues. Nrich Foods won through its region-wise specifics (Ragi Sangati) through influencer-based local marketing and tie-ups with vendors and e-commerce platforms. Yet, challenges continue on the distribution and competitive fronts. Practical Implications: The findings of the case study emphasise sustainable development goals (SDGs) on hunger, health, decent work, and climate action, and inform policy on sustainable nutrition-rich agribusiness and consumer knowledge. This study has possible implications for policy support in sustainable agribusiness and consumer education to scale up nutrient-dense food systems by providing insight into actionable strategies for accomplishing nutritional security and ecological sustainability.
