A Prototype for Developing Competency-based Virtual Learning in Mexico
Abstract
Purpose: This chapter aims to present the design of a prototype of a virtual learning environment for an educational model based on professional competencies and aimed at strengthening efforts in higher education institutions (HEIs) to advance toward the achievement of sustainable development goal (SDG) 4 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Quality Education lies in significantly increasing the number of students and professionals who have the necessary skills to access a decent job market and entrepreneurship that aligns with the global needs that society demands. Methodology: The chapter shows a study developed in a Mexican HEI under a qualitative research approach, with a descriptive-interpretative scope, applying an action research design and digital ethnography. The study used a digital observation technique with screenshots in an intentionally selected learning community, allowing the analysis of the phenomenon of interest until identifying the categories and subcategories of the object of study. Findings: The findings showed a considerable improvement in student performance regarding learning objectives and competencies development. It was concluded that it is necessary to implement technology and plan the pedagogical structure by developing an instructional design that contain sufficient and relevant elements for developing competencies with coherence between them, seeking a structure of organization, understanding, and visualization. Practical Implications: The study presented in this chapter provides practical insights into solving challenging situations in the creation of virtual learning environments (VLEs). These environments must allow access to a greater number of students, regardless of their geographical location.
