Abstract

Green initiatives can enhance environmental sustainability through methods like reducing waste, conserving resources, and adopting green human resource management (GHRM) practices. Such initiatives have gained momentum as organizations recognize their environmental benefits and their positive impact on employee engagement. Green initiatives provide employees with a feeling of purpose, boost motivation, and increase job satisfaction by aligning company goals with their values. This chapter delves into how green initiatives enhance employee engagement and motivation. It begins by defining “green initiatives” and their growing importance in corporate social responsibility (CSR) and environmentally friendly human resource management (HRM) practices. Based on the social exchange theory (SET) and the ability, motivation, and opportunity (AMO) framework theories, this chapter focuses on how green HRM practices (like hiring, training, and performance management) help organizations and employees align their values. The chapter emphasizes transformational leadership and both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation strategies to encourage employees to work toward sustainability goals. It also highlights international best practices and innovations while addressing the difficulties in implementing green initiatives, such as resource limitations and resistance to change. The chapter concludes by exploring how aligning GHRM policies with green initiatives boosts employee engagement and contributes to a sustainable environment.
