Integrating Sustainability and Innovation in the Organisation: Supporting Change Through Sustainable Human Resource Management
Abstract
This chapter aims to capitalise on insights from a wide range of existing literature to understand the role of human resource management (HRM) in driving sustainability and innovation in an organisation, along with listing the drivers and barriers in the path of integrating innovation and sustainability. The main purpose is to assist organisations in driving change by proposing supportive human resource (HR) strategies for becoming more future-ready leaders and contributing towards innovative ecosystems and sustainability. A systematic literature review approach has been adopted and various studies in the area, specifically focussing on sustainability, innovation, and the role of HRM in enhancing the same, were shortlisted and analysed. After reviewing existing literature, it is evident that many green HRM practices can contribute towards developing sustainable and innovative ecosystems to increase the competitiveness of the business and minimise environmental impact. A greater emphasis has been given to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), as it is considered a crucial component by HR and top management for the overall growth of the organisation and sustained innovation. This study can help HR practitioners and business leaders improve their HRM practices by adopting strategies for cultivating innovative ecosystems for organisation sustainability that can help them towards fruitful decision-making. Present research is limited to the exploration of secondary sources only. Further application of statistical tools on primary data collected by future researchers may bring more insights into the linkages between HRM, sustainability, and innovation.
