Abstract

Abstract This interdisciplinary study utilizes historical, sociological, and anthropological approaches to address the hegemonic relationship between the American occupiers and the natives of the Philippines in the aftermath of the Spanish–American War of 1898 until the granting of independence in the wake of World War II. In particular, it assesses the role of the YMCA and the colonial government in the American attempt to inculcate Western norms, values, and practices via sport and how natives adopted and adapted such practices to their own evolving national culture.
