Abstract

Abstract Through leveraging high-profile sports events and long-term sports development policies, Singapore strategically transformed itself into a premier global sports hub within a span of five decades as a newly formed nation. Sports in Singapore evolved from a nation-building tool to an economic driver, commencing with the completion of the Singapore Sports Hub in 2015. The state-of-the-art facility provided opportunities for the hosting of international sports events, including the inaugural 2010 Youth Olympic Games, which bolstered Singapore’s reputation. However, challenges emerged with the Sports Hub’s public-private partnership (PPP), leading to the governmental takeover in 2022 to fulfil its national objectives of community engagement. Recent successes, including the 2023 Olympic Esports Week and the 2025 World Aquatics Championships, underscore Singapore’s resilience in the competitive global sports arena. As Singapore continues to position itself as Asia’s leading sports and entertainment destination, balancing commercial viability with social goals remains an important agenda for the nation.
