Abstract

Abstract The integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into retail management offers substantial benefits, particularly in the South African retail sector. By strategically aligning their operations with ESG principles, retailers can achieve improved sustainability and efficiency, enhanced brand reputation, risk mitigation and supply chain resilience, ultimately leading to long-term business success. The adoption of environmentally friendly practices such as reducing plastic usage, promoting recycling and increasing energy efficiency significantly enhances sustainability and compliance with regulatory standards. Additionally, actively communicating ESG efforts can build stronger customer relationships, boosting loyalty and market competitiveness. ESG integration is also crucial for mitigating risks and ensuring supply chain resilience, as it empowers suppliers, supports social development and fosters stakeholder engagement. Furthermore, adherence to ESG standards reduces legal risks and enhances regulatory relationships. Overall, the strategic incorporation of ESG practices proves to be both ethically sound and economically advantageous for retailers aiming to succeed in today’s competitive market.
