Bridging User Psychology and AI in Interior Design: The Impact of Designer Intervention on Output Quality
Abstract
This study investigates the effect of users’ psychological preferences on the performance of AI-powered interior design tools. It examines the role of designer intervention in enhancing design efficiency and user satisfaction. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, consisting of an experimental phase with 20 participants who used Coohom to generate 20 AI-based layouts and designs, and a quantitative analysis phase involving 101 professional designers who evaluated paired AI-only and designer-refined outputs through a structured questionnaire assessing psychological preferences. The questionnaire was adapted from validated instruments and achieved acceptable reliability. The findings support the proposed hypothesis that users’ preferences significantly enhance AI performance, and design efficiency is particularly increased when designers intervene. Statistical analysis revealed a significant positive association between designer-informed AI use and perceived efficiency. Qualitative feedback further indicated that designer-enhanced outputs were more emotionally resonant and functionally appropriate. The study highlights the importance of integrating psychological preferences into AI workflows and reinforces the dual role of designers in bridging user needs with AI capabilities.
