Hybrid Bidirectional Boost-Switched-Capacitor Converter With Elevated Voltage Gain for Energy Storage System Interfaces
Abstract
This paper presents a hybrid bidirectional energy converter based on switched-capacitor technology, combining the parallel input configuration of a conventional boost converter with the series arrangement of its output capacitors. This topology also allows the input voltage to contribute to the series voltage of the switched capacitors at the output. The operational stages in both step-up and step-down modes are described, and a detailed analysis of the dynamic and static models is conducted, forming the basis for the control system design. To validate the theoretical analyses, a prototype operating at 72/400 V with power ranging from 80 to 500 W was constructed. Experimental results confirmed the robustness of the converter, achieving a peak efficiency of approximately 95.04 % at 500 W. Moreover, the ability to reverse the power flow in real time without interrupting the system renders the converter particularly suitable for integration into renewable energy systems and energy storage applications.
